Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran and owner of a prominent Trump-themed residence in California, died Sunday from injuries sustained during an alleged attack by a stranger.
Sheron was assaulted outside his Escondido home on Wednesday afternoon, police said. He remained in critical condition at a hospital for several days before his death Sunday night.
The Escondido Police Department responded to reports of an assault at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, adjacent to Sheron’s property. Officers found Sheron suffering significant injuries to his head and jaw.

The Arrest and Charges
Police arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler and charged him with attempted murder. Butler is being held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County.
The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office stated it is “reviewing the circumstances to determine whether charges will be amended,” following Sheron’s death.
A bystander who intervened during the violence also sustained injuries, police said. Butler fled the scene but was apprehended without incident.
The Suspect’s Background
According to an acquaintance, Butler is a Navy veteran who struggles with serious mental health issues, including PTSD. The friend told the California Post that Butler had been medicated for mental illness but his condition had worsened significantly despite treatment.
“He sits in his room and thinks everyone is coming to get him,” the friend reportedly said of Butler’s deteriorating mental state.
The acquaintance also noted that Butler had been unemployed since leaving the Navy.
The Trump House and Political Context

Sheron’s home is widely known throughout the San Diego area as the “Trump House” due to its extensive displays of American flags, patriotic decorations, and pro-Trump messaging. The property has attracted both supporters and critics for years and has been subject to vandalism and complaints.
Sheron’s wife, Maria Garcia, told CBS 8 that she believed the attack was politically motivated. “He tried to kill my husband, you know,” she said. “It’s terrible. I don’t know what kind of hate… what heart, the black heart.”
Garcia suggested the visible patriotic displays may have fueled hostility toward the residence. “They don’t like the flags. I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is [a] veteran,” she told the outlet.
Investigation Ongoing
While police have not publicly declared a specific motive for the attack, authorities are investigating all circumstances surrounding the incident. The highly visible political messaging on Sheron’s home has fueled speculation about potential motives among observers.
