President Donald Trump said Wednesday he has no knowledge of former Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell’s condition weeks after the Kentucky Republican was hospitalized.
McConnell, 84, was found unconscious at his Washington home in mid-June and required CPR, according to initial reports. His office has released minimal updates since his hospitalization, stating only that he is receiving “excellent care” and continues to improve.
What Trump and Others Are Saying

Trump told reporters he had not spoken with McConnell since the hospitalization and possessed no information about the senator’s current status. White House correspondent Libby Dean reported the president’s comments on Wednesday.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said earlier that he had spoken with McConnell and the senator “sounded good” and wanted to return to work. However, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah contradicted those accounts, stating that many members of Congress “know nothing about his condition.”
Demands for Transparency
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent a letter to McConnell on Wednesday requesting a full health update for constituents. “As public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent,” Beshear wrote, adding that clear communication about one’s ability to serve is necessary.
The lack of official information has sparked speculation online and among conservative figures about the severity of McConnell’s condition. Some social media users and activists have questioned why other senators have not provided details.

The Uncertainty Ahead
McConnell’s office said last week that the senator “continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.” McConnell’s term expires in January 2025.
No timeline has been announced for his return to the Senate. His office has not released additional medical details beyond stating he is receiving appropriate care.
