Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden, has filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years in Pennsylvania.
The 44-year-old submitted divorce documents to Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas on Monday, ending her marriage to Dr. Howard Krein, a plastic surgeon. Court records in the jurisdiction are sealed, so details about the separation remain undisclosed.
The Marriage
Biden and Krein married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, after being introduced by Ashley’s late brother Beau roughly two years prior. The couple kept their family life out of the public eye throughout their more than a decade together.
Ashley spoke about the wedding during the 2024 Democratic National Convention, recounting her father’s involvement in the celebration. “At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,” she said while introducing Joe Biden to convention attendees.

On the same day the filing became public, Ashley posted an Instagram photo of herself walking through woods with a thumbs-up gesture, using Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” as the backdrop. She captioned the post with a message about moving forward.
“New life, new beginnings, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” her statement read, indicating she is focused on the transition ahead.
