Colin Farrell has played many powerful roles on screen, but none has been more important—or more personal—than being a father to his son, James.
Now 21, James has been at the center of Colin’s world since the day he was born. And recently, the Irish actor made a deeply emotional decision about his son’s future—one that has touched hearts around the world.
A Father’s Journey
Colin welcomed his first child, James, in 2003 with model Kim Bordenave. At first, James seemed like a “chill baby,” Colin recalled—but by 18 months, something felt off. James wasn’t meeting developmental milestones, and eventually, doctors diagnosed him with Angelman syndrome, a rare neuro-genetic disorder that affects speech, movement, and cognitive ability. There’s no cure, but it’s not a painful condition.
From day one, Colin stepped up—not just as a provider, but as a hands-on dad. He changed diapers, fed James, and attended every therapy session. He’s even had to help James through seizures, administering emergency medication in terrifying moments.
“He’s Bright, He’s Cheeky, and He Knows What He Wants”
Despite the challenges, James has grown into a spirited young man. “He’s strong now, six foot tall with a mustache like Tom Selleck,” Colin said with a smile. “He’s bold and bright and knows exactly what he wants.”
As James approached adulthood, Colin began to think more seriously about the future—and what would happen if one day, he or Kim weren’t around.
That thought haunted him.

Planning for a Future with Dignity
In an emotional interview, Colin shared that he and Kim have made the incredibly difficult decision to place James in long-term care—not because they’re giving up, but because they want him to have a secure, connected life, even if something were to happen to them.
“If I have a heart attack tomorrow, and Kim has a car crash… then what? James would become a ward of the state,” Colin said. “And he goes where? We’d have no say in it.”
Instead, they want to choose a home for him now, while they’re both alive and well. A place they can visit often. A place James can build new routines, make friends, go to the beach, the supermarket, museums—just live a full life.
“We’re not stepping back,” Colin emphasized. “We’re stepping up.”
Love That Plans Ahead
This wasn’t a decision made out of exhaustion—it was made out of love, and a deep, practical foresight.
As James begins this new chapter, Colin also continues to advocate for others through the Colin Farrell Foundation, dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Parenting doesn’t stop at 18—or even at 21. And for Colin Farrell, loving James means doing everything he can to protect his future.
