Very Rare Vertical Aurora Caught On Camera
A Russian photographer who wanted to take some pictures of an aurora that had appeared above his community managed to take pictures of a rare form of the phenomenon in which it appears vertical. Valentin Zhiganov reportedly documented the remarkable sight on a particularly cold evening, when temperatures in the city of Apatity dropped to -22 degrees Celsius.
According to Zhiganov, he had originally planned to photograph some of his friends lying in a whirlpool with a covered Aurora, but his concept changed quickly when he noticed that the natural light show had a pretty unique look. Instead of looking like swirling clouds of colorful illuminations, he was amazed that the Aurora actually looked more like a row of light columns.
